All Costa Rican coffees are Arabica beans. They are marketed around the world under the names; Tarrazu, Tres Rios, Cartago, San Jose, Curridabat, San Ramon, Heredia, Montes de Oca, Naranjo and Sabanilla. Costa Rica Tarrazu Coffee is in many people's opinion one of the world's greatest coffees with its delicious flavor and powerful fragrance. The Tarrazu region is located south of San Jose at the more remote highlands up the Pirris River basin which is regarded as one of the most perfect coffee-growing areas in the world. There are four major contributors to uniqueness of the Tarrazu region coffees, the altitude, the rich volcanic soil, cool climate and coffee farming tradition that spreads through generations of coffee growers. These fantastic coffee growing conditions result in a coffee with full-bodied richness and excellent acidity. Costa Rican coffee beans are graded by the hardness of the bean. This is determined by the altitude at which they are grown: - (SHB) strictly hard bean is a coffee grown above 3,900 feet. -(GHB) good hard bean grow at 3,300 to 3,900 feet. - (MHB) medium hard bean grown at 1,600 to 3,300 feet. Costa Rican coffees grown in the Atlantic area carry that fact in their names, as in High Grown Atlantic which is favored by the European nations.
A know 'secret' of great Tarrazu coffee is that famous coffee distributors and Tarrazu Coffee Farmers blend cheaper quality Robusta Coffee and still offer what they call gourmet coffee beans. It also has been known that other famous coffee growing regions play a role in what distributors package as a brand of Tarrazu coffee. Of the coffee grown in Central American, Costa Rican coffee is the strongest and perhaps the best to blend with any other coffees. Now keep in mind that there are much lesser grades of Costa Rican coffee beans, but they are sold specifically for "blending" with much of the higher volume "commercial" blend.
