This standard is made possible by the expertise, experience and favorable physical conditions which converge in this remarkable land. ![]() Coffee production has played a key role in Costa Rica's history and economy and by 2006 was the third cash crop export. The largest coffee growing areas are in the provinces of San José, Alajuela, Heredia, Puntarenas, and Cartago. Costa Rica is famous for its gourmet coffee beans, with Costa Rican Tarrazú among the finest Arabica coffee beans in the world used for making espresso coffee, together with Jamaican Blue Mountain, Guatemalan Antigua and Ethiopian Sidamo. The Tres Rios region coffees are considered the 'Saint-Emilion' of Costa Rica. Located in the lush and beautiful Central Valley and the San Jose Metro Area, Tres Rios is a tiny town in Cartago province. Lying in Costa Rica's main coffee growing region, San José is known to produce some of the best coffee in the country and is exported all over the world. Situated in a gorgeous area with rolling green hills, Tres Rios sits 11 km east of Downtown San Jose and some 10 odd kilometers west of the town of Cartago.
