Coffee Machine Filters

Choosing the right filter can make a huge difference on your coffee cup taste...

Coffee Machine Filters

Different Styles And Types Of Coffee Filters

The coffee machine filters used in coffee makers are manufactured in different shapes and sizes, but which one is right for you? It all really depends on the type of machine you have, your taste for coffee and how often you drink it. This article will help you choose the right coffee maker filter for you.

Different styles of coffee filters

Generally there are two shapes of coffee filters – cone shaped and basket shaped.

A cone filter lets the water run faster through the coffee grinds, while a basket filter will allow the water to stay in contact with the coffee grinds longer.

The cone shaped filters  - are less prone to spillage and are easier to clean.

The basket filters - filter the water more evenly, but, they require bigger grinds.

Different types of Coffee Machine filters

Paper Coffee Filters

Paper coffee filters are the most widely used by casual coffee brewers. Paper filters have an advantage they are inexpensive, get you a decent cup and are disposable. At the end all you have to do is get the filter out and throw it in the garbage.

Some people assert that paper filters absorb too much of the coffee grinds natural oils, which is where the flavor lies, therefore they prefer to use metal or cloth filters.

Cloth Coffee Filters

These filters are the hardest to clean because coffee grinds stick to the cloth, and so it actually takes a bigger effort to rinse out all the grinds and this makes them less popular.  Nevertheless coffee connoisseurs think it is well worth extra work for a superior tasting cup of coffee.

Metal Coffee Filters

These filters are more durable than any other filter and are made of stainless steel. They are easier to clean than cloth, but you do need to clean them well to avoid tainting your next cup with the taste of the previous one.

Metal coffee filters are generally pretty large which makes them ideal for people who brew multiple cups at one time, such as large families, business offices or coffee shops.

An easy way to speed up your coffee brewing, is to have two metal filters that way you can start brewing your next cup right away just by changing the used filter with a clean one and wash the used one later. My K Cup by Keurig is a popular model of metal filters.

Gold And Gold Toned Coffee Filters

There are two types of these filters the Swiss gold coffee filters and gold toned coffee filters.

The Swiss gold filters are so called because they are really made out of gold - they are gold plated with 23 karat gold. According to the experts gold filters have the best ability to retain the coffee’s natural oils and provide a great tasting cup of coffee. These gold filters are expensive and can cost $ 20 and above.

On the other hand the gold toned coffee filters are made of treated stainless steel to avoid the transfer of the metallic taste to your coffee. These available from $8 and above.  These filters long life makes the price worthy, also, there are no messy clean ups after brewing your coffee.

The Gold Tone filters offer you a choice of basket and cone styles that fit most coffeemakers, including Mr. Coffee, Krups and Braun. (Mr. Coffee and Krups are already equipped with them in some of their newer models).

Water Filters

These filters purify the water before it goes through the coffee grinds, some high end coffee machines include a water filter. In areas where calc is abundant in the water or in larger cities where water is treated, these filters are useful since water needs to be filtered.

You can find brand water filters in almost any major department store or online coffee maker distributor, like the popular water filter from Brita. Some of Braun's coffee maker models include Brita water filters.

The charcoal water filters are quiet popular and remove up to 82% of Chlorine that is found in tap water. These charcoal filters are offered with some coffee maker models by Braun and Kitchenaid among other manufacturers.

How to clean your metal and gold coffee filter

Most users of coffee filters have a drip type coffee machine. Once your gold coffee filter starts getting stained here are some easy tips to clean it

  • First pour 4 cups of hot water into a large glass bowl with 1 oz citric acid.

  • Next add 4 cups of cold water to the mix and pour the solution into the coffee maker water chamber.

  • Than start your coffee maker and let half of the water solution run through the machine.

  • Now, let it sit for 15 minutes.  After the pause start up the coffee maker again and let the rest of the solution run through.

  • Finally throw away the solution in the pot and run 8 cups of clean water through the coffee maker to rinse out the solution.

The coffee machine filters have come a long way from cloth, to paper and now metal, they allow coffee lovers around the world to taste a better coffee everyday.
