Coffee Beans Stenophylla Review
Characteristics:
Coffea Stenophylla was discovered in the
1890 in West Africa. At that time,
farmers grew it for their own personal
use.
This particular coffea plant is
nicknamed the “Forgotten Bean,” “Bush
Coffee,” or “Sierra Leone Mountain
Coffee.” The names come partially from
the rarity in which this plant is grown
for commercial use today.
Identifying the Coffea Stenphylla plant
is isn’t difficult. It has narrow leaves
and is much smaller than other coffea
plants. The cherries are medium sized
and the flowers are tinted yellow.
Where it is Planted:
Coffea Stenophylla is planted on the
Ivory Coast, Ghana, Guinea, and Nigeria.
This plant thrives in a semi-desert
climate, as very little water is needed.
Coffea cultivators who use greenhouses
can easily grow this variety. The roots
are shallow and small. However, Coffea
Stenophylla is not grown as a primary
commercial coffea because it matures
very slowly. Most coffea plants fully
mature in seven years. Coffea Stenphylla
fully matures in nine years. This fact
partially accounts for its unique taste.
How it Tastes:
Coffea Stenophylla is comparable to tea
with its mild flavor. There is not a
hint of either a burnt or an earthy
flavor that is common to many of the
region’s coffea varieties. Those who are
new to coffee drinking may find this
variety a welcome change from stronger
varieties.
Blending with Other Beans:
Coffea Stenophylla may be used as a
filler in coffea blends. However, it is
easily overpowered by other coffea
varieties, which is the reason most
coffea enthusiasts may not readily taste
it in the blend. Coffea Stenophylla is
lower in caffeine content, in comparison
to other coffeas. This makes it ideal
for a before bed brew.
