Descaling or Decalcifying Coffee Machines

Cleaning coffee machines - Descaling or Decalcifying Coffee Machines

Users are often mystified by the 'how to' of descaling Coffee Machines so we wrote this small guide from info we collected from the internet and based on our experience.

Mandatory Read - General Disclaimer:

Please always follow your manufacturers directions as failure to do so may void you warranty.  We provide this information as is and it does not replace your machine manufacturers instructions.

Now lets go to the how to Cleaning Coffee Machines.

1. Follow your manufacturers advise and use their sugested descaling products.

All commercial back flushing chemicals should be avoided at home, office and vending espresso coffee machines.

All supermakets sell descalers and coffee machine cleaners but they may not be suitable for your machine.

Most manufacturers prohibite the use of vinegar for cleaning coffee machines and may void your warranty if you do.

We at CoffeeSnoop recommend Organic Descaling products.

2. Consult your manufacturers instruction manual.

3. Water tank must be removed from coffee machine prior to adding your dissolved descaling solution.

This will prevent you from pouring descaling solution into grinder bean hoper which often is adjacent to water tank. Following this advice can save you plenty of money a damaged grinder can cost you plenty to repair.

Also only fill the water tank with water after you removed it from the machine.

4. Next mix the Descaling or Decalcifying product in a separate container filled with water then pour the solution into the coffee machine water tank.

Descaling powder must NEVER be added directly into your Coffee Machine water tank.

Descaling powder added to water tank without previously mixing with water may cause serious damage to filter and pump systems.

If you happen to add Descaling powder to water tank without mixing in a fully automatic coffee machine, the digital display sign will flash red warning lights, and your machine will shut  down.

5. In the particular case of twin boiler machines make sure to descale both sides.

In these coffee machines water dispensed from the steam pipe or auto frother and the hot water dispensed when extracting coffee come from different parts. So be sure to alternatively use the descaling solution on each side.

In top of the line fully automatic models, descaling is pre-programmed and already incorporated in the machine system.

Generally electronic descaling only runs the descaling solution through the steam pipe. The coffee extraction water system must also be descaled. In some machines you can use the bypass doser for this.

Descale by making coffee cups where a bypass doser is not available. In semi-automatic coffee machines you can make coffee cups without any ground coffee in the filter basket.

6. Warm up the machine for 30 seconds.

Flush one cup of descaling solution from steam pipe and the turn machine off.

Turn machine on again after a pause of 3 to 4 minutes and make one large cup of coffee (without using coffee beans if possible). This process should be repeated for as long as there is solution in the tank.

Semi-automatic and fully automatic espresso machines benefit best from this method.

7.  After the desclaing process is over, rinse the water tank thoroughly and fill with fresh clean filtered water

The steam side and the coffee side must be fully flushed from descaling solution. The rinsing process should be done alternatively until at least one of the 2 tanks of water is emptied and all chemicals have been flushed out.

Caution while cleaning coffee machines:

1. While performing any of these procedures Do Not leave the machine until completing it fully.

Any solution left inside will rust, tarnish metallic surfaces and contribute to the premature demise of your coffee machine.

2. Warn everyone in the house or office, place a sign on the machine and do not remove until all operations are completed and the machine is ready for use.

3. Chrome plated machine parts or other objects may not be submerged in descaling solution for more than 10 seconds, chrome will easily corrode and turn black.

4. Un-used descaling solution should be immediately discarded.  If left in a container it may lead someone to accidentally use it as water which will cause serious stomach discomfort and irritation to the teeth.
