Zojirushi’s EC-BD15BA 1.5 Liter Fresh Brew Coffee Maker with Vacuum Stainless Steel Carafe is gorgeous and functional and will look spectacular on your countertop. It has many wonderful features.Lots of folks dislike the burnt flavor that coffee gets when it sits in a glass pot over a heating element. To avoid this, coffee shops often brew right into large thermal pots to keep the coffee warm without it becoming overcooked. The Zojirushi Fresh Brew does that, too, but in home-sized batches. It looks great, too, with a glossy black body and stainless steel carafe and brew basket. To brew, lift the lid and swing the water outlet spout to one side while the filter is being loaded; the spout will return to its proper position when the lid is closed. A small red ball in the water gauge makes it extra simple to read. And an electronic clock module also serves as a timer that will start the brewer at a specified time. The carafe’s lid is designed to be on during brewing, with a small cap to help keep the heat in after it’s ready. The Fresh Brew also has a pause-and-serve function that stops the flow for 30 seconds while a cup of coffee is served. To clean the brewer unit, use a solution of white vinegar and water, following the instructions in the accompanying booklet. The unit is not immersible. The exterior can be wiped with a damp soft rag; do not use abrasives or scouring pads. The filter reservoir is removable; clean with warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly. I purchased the Mr. Coffee JWX27 to replace an old, old programmable Mr. Coffee coffeemaker. I picked the JWX27 because it has stainless steel trim, the appearance of which I like, but it doesn’t have a thermal carafe that a lot of the stainless brewers have and I don’t want, and it is reasonably priced. My old brewer wasn’t anything fancy to look at, but it started up in the morning on its own and it made good coffee. This new model has several “improvements” that actually take away from the simple, useful appliance the old one was.

First, the water filter. This is a piece of filtering material in a frame that lays on top of the brew basket. You have to pivot the water head away from over the brew basket and pick up the filter gadget to get to the basket to put your coffee in it. I plan to throw this junky thing away. It’s a messy, annoying contraption that is just getting on the way of setting up the coffeemaker and I have some serious doubts about its effectiveness since it looks like it’s made of paper. Additionally, if you’re trying to brew a second pot quickly after the first, it’s hot!

Speaking of the brew basket, rather than sitting in a separate assembly that pivots in and out over the carafe, to get to the basket on the JWX27, you have to flip open lid of the brewing machine. Once you get the water filter out of the way, there are some little loops to pull the basket out by, but it’s not as neat as past designs that had a handle on the side to lift out the basket for dumping used filters/coffee grounds.

On the positive side, the clock and start timer are easy to set and are easy to understand how to brew immediately or brew at a programmed time. I have no need for the timer that can tell me how long the brewed coffee has been sitting, but it doesn’t make itself annoying in any way, so no problem with it. The heating element turns itself off after two hours, which is peace of mind for when you are sitting at your desk at work wondering “did I turn off the coffeepot?” and worrying that you’ll burn the house down.

The “pause ‘n serve” function is still there for when you can’t wait for a pot to finish up before getting that first cup of coffee into your cup but if I could figure out how to remove or disable the irritating beeper that goes off when the brew cycle is done, I’d totally do it. I live in a small house and when my coffee is ready at 5:00 AM, the rest of my family doesn’t need to be woken up by Mr. Coffee obnoxiously announcing himself!

The JWX27 has a feature to switch between “regular” and “strong” brewing, and set on “strong”, the resulting coffee (when I brew my usual 4 cups rather than a full pot) I get a nice strong “wake you up in the morning” brew.

In conclusion, my overall impression is that the Mr. Coffee JWX27 has a host of features that actually take away from the utility and ease of use that the basic no-frills Mr. Coffee design has but in spite of the unnecessary (from my perspective) annoyances, it makes a decent pot of coffee for a reasonable price.

I don’t actually drink coffee, but I gave this coffeemaker to my parents for Christmas — and I took a long time to choose one at that time. Dad wanted a glass carafe which he could fit his hand into (in case it needed a scrub), an auto shutoff, and a timer feature so the brew would be ready for him upon waking. And he didn’t want ten million controls which he would never use. It’s gotten daily use since then (in addition to a few cups of coffee every morning, the carafe and basket have been put through the dishwasher every two or three days, and the cleaning cycle is used just about every day) and we’ve never had a problem. I didn’t even know it came with a special filter, as the other reviewer noted, but Dad wouldn’t have used it anyway — he was old school. Mom and Dad always said the coffee tasted perfect. I am buying one now myself to have on hand for when Mom visits.

Before purchasing the HB 43254 Classic Stainless 12 cup coffee maker I read the reviews like I normally do before making any purchase. I decided to purchase this coffee maker knowing that there may be some minor issues with it – what doesn’t these days? After many years of buying coffee makers I have found there is no “perfect” coffee maker that will make everyone happy. You just need to decide what is important to you and your family. That said, after about three weeks of use I found it to be exactly what I was looking for – it makes HOT coffee, the carafe DOESN’T drip and I didn’t need to use a manual to set up the clock and timer! If this is what you are looking for stop reading and purchase this unit now. Enjoy the coffee maker…

For those that really need to know more before purchasing continue reading:

- This coffee maker uses basket shaped filters. So you can give your neighbor your unused cone shaped paper filters you may still have.

- The water reservoir does have a rather small opening but it is not too small like some very expensive coffee makers I have seen. Some may find it easier to use a large cup a couple of times to fill the reservoir instead of using the carafe. Either way I never needed to turn the coffee maker sideways to fill the reservoir.

- The water spout does swivel to allow you to install the filter and add coffee. You only need to move it once that is if you fill the water reservoir first. When closing the lid it will move the spout back into the proper position so you don’t have to remember to do it yourself.

- I too had a defective carafe that leaked at the top between the plastic rim and glass. I called customer service, waited a few minutes, and spoke to someone in the USA. It was replaced within a few days at no charge. I sealed the original carafe until the replacement arrived.

- I never had an issue with pouring a cup of coffee using the auto pause and serve feature. Besides, how often do you really “need” to have a cup of coffee before it is done brewing? If you are that desperate, set the timer so it is done brewing before you get up in the morning.

I purchased the Hamilton-Beach coffee maker after reading all its reviews on Amazon, and reviews for other comparably priced appliances. I had owned a Cuisinart coffee maker that died, but had been problematic all along, and I was reluctant to buy another of the same. Most of the H-B reviewers agreed about the product’s benefits and drawbacks. The drawbacks were very few–there are some minor design flaws, but nothing egregious–and reviewers consistently agreed that the H-B made coffee at a very hot temperature and maintained that. That was what sold me on the H-B.

I have owned it for about six weeks now and have not been disappointed. I think the H-B coffee maker offers a good value and good design for its price. It doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles, but for me that’s an advantage. I don’t want a coffee maker that buys and grinds the beans, fills itself , and makes coffee at precisely 7.45 a.m. Those sorts of appliances have too many flaws, in my opinion (viz. the Cuisinart), too many moving parts (hence things that can go wrong), and too many features that I never use. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a user-friendly appliance at a fair price.
