Best Coffee Grinder

Coffee Grinders are an absolute must have for any coffee lover. Grinding your coffee just before you use it, allows you to taste coffee how it should be, fresh and vibrant.

Anfim, Rancilio and Mazzer stand out from the crowd...

Finding the best coffee grinder in the large variety of grinders on the market these days can be a real task.

People sometimes have the misconception that ground coffee has as long a life as days. In reality it can be a matter of hours. There is nothing finer than a coffee made with freshly ground beans.

Follow our coffee machine reviews simple guidelines on how to choose the best grinder for your needs.

Choosing the all purpose high quality machine will help you in fulfilling all your needs, whether it is the fine grind for espresso machine or the coarse grind for your French press.

You may blame your new coffee machine if you get confused and buy a cheaper blade-style machine. The Coffee Snoop guide will help you in getting the right one in first time only.

  • About the Grind... different sized coffee grounds are required by different coffee makers. Like, an espresso machine requires the finest ground coffee. Drip / filter machines requires medium grounds and, due to its relatively large-holed filter, a French press requires very coarse grounds. At the time of brewing the coffee the finely ground coffee has more surface area in contact with the water. That means by using less finely ground coffee you will be able to extract the same full flavor that you would normally get from a large portion of coarsely ground coffee.
  • Over extraction will.. occur in case of allowing grounds to come into contact with too much water. French press requires a coarse grind because the coffee steeps for up to 4 minutes. An espresso machine requires a fine grind because the equipment is designed to force a small amount of water through the grounds for less than 25 seconds.
  • A good grinder will.. produce grounds of a consistent and accurate size. You would find an uneven extraction and muddy sludge at the bottom of the cup you will go for powdered coffee mixed with larger grounds. Help you in grinding the finest (almost powdery) or very coarse (like raw sugar) and everything in between. This will also help you in making a perfect cup if you get the flexibility to grind for espresso machines right through to a French press.
Not burn your coffee. A good grinder will give you a thorough and consistent grind without too much friction.

There are three Types of Coffee Grinder:

1. Blade / Mill Coffee Grinders (Amazon link)

These grinders use blades to 'chop' the beans into smaller pieces. The blade coffee grinders, because of their chopping method, cannot achieve the consistency and also they create an enormous amount of friction which actually burns the beans giving the coffee an undesirable taste.

Only buy a blade grinder when:
1) you will not be making espresso
2) you are not prepared to spend more money on a burr grinder and it's "blade or nothing". Any fresh grind is better than buying pre-ground.

2.
Burr Coffee Grinders (Flat Wheel - Amazon Link)
These grinders work by crushing the beans between two discs, or wheels one spinning and one stationary. The wheel move more slowly than the blades in a mill grinder which generates less friction, so the result is not burnt and is also more consistent.

A Burr grinder is great for home use but they must be cleaned (which requires a little work) especially if you don’t use it on a regular basis. But it is worth the effort.

3.
Conical Burr Coffee Grinders

Conical burr coffee grinders are generally the best you can buy and the most expensive too. They work using a conical shaped grinding surface that allows you to select a wide range of consistent grinds from powdery to very coarse. Some machines allow you to choose a longer grinding time to eliminate friction and static build up (static can cause the coffee to cling to the grinder) and also they also spin even slower creating less friction and less static electricity which causes the coffee to stick in the crevices of the grinder making it harder to clean.

Cleaning of Conical burr grinders are more difficult than other types of grinder, but if you're buying one of these the results will be so good you won't mind at all.

A word of caution - unless you are prepared to spend a lot of money buying one of the best rated coffee grinders like a commercial quality conical burr coffee grinder, it would be better of buying a disk-style burr grinder (see above). This is because many of the conical burr grinders marketed for home use come with a plastic burr carrier. If this is the case, you are better off with a flat-disk style burr system that has a metal (brass) burr assembly.

Some users and experts consider the Rancilio Rocky Doser Espresso Grinder as THE grinder for use in the home and the best coffee grinder (Hyperlink - Click here to view the Rancilio Coffee Grinder) for the money you pay.
